China’s Facebook’s
China Web2.0 Review has a nice post on China’s Campus Social Networking Market. With all the talk about Facebook (which whom I actually met with 2 weeks ago, just after the “turned down” an $1 Billon deal from Yahoo). An interesting question is how much one can replicate the success of Facebook outside of the US given the specific character the alumni community in the US has.
After Facebook got more exposure in Chinese media, more and more networking startups started its own model. There are at least 20 players in on this arena in China today.
The most obvious copy of Facebook is Xiaonei – launched in late 2005. CWR also lists:
* Xiaonei
* Zhanzuo
* Yeejee
* 5Q
* ChinaRen Xiaonei
* ChinaY
* Dipian
* Baodoo
* Dorm99
* eDorm.cn
* FaceRen
Although not a $1 Billion deal. Oak Pacific Interactive has just acquired Xiaonei – the Chinese version of Facebook. This acquisition will be very interesting to follow. I actually sat on the same panel as Joe Chen, Oak Pacific Interactive’s CEO and President earlier this year on The Global Internet Summit. Next time I am in Beijing, I will ask him how Xiaonei is developing.
